I explored the theme of combining landscapes and constructing landscapes, initially I thought it wouldn't be too challenging, however it started out harder than it expected as combining landscapes could be quite a limited theme. However as, I refined and learned from previous work I was able to create better and improved outcomes for my work. I also explored the theme of landscapes in itself, I used various skills such as analysing, constructing and editing to achieve my outcomes.
When I started my journey, I decided to use physical crafting using equipment and various cards and paper, however as my work developed I found that doing my theme physically would be fiddly and too tie consuming, therefore I switched to a digital interpretation and used sites such as photoshop to further develop my theme and skills to its fullest potential. During this project I have studied numerous photographers, however the main one i researched and took inspiration for in my own work was Yi Dai, I liked her work as she combined lots of little landscapes and put them into one big landscape. sometimes she did this by going on a bus trip and taking a photo every 10 seconds outside the window, I initially tried something similar by riding my bike instead, however the quality of the images weren't as good as they could have been when attempting an experiment. Nonetheless I combatted this by improving the quality of the images and the experiment process. I think I tackled the threshold concept of- what are the similarities and differences between photography and different types of visual arts? I tackled this by using a variety of different techniques and visual processes and experimenting with them to see which were favourable.
I have used various various different processes and techniques, some being more successful then others, for example, I have experimented with photoshop, photograms, colour prints, cyanotypes, sculptures, slides, diptychs and a lot of cutting and sticking. I have made a lot of decisions some good, some bad. However I think my main success out of all experiments on my page was photoshop, such as the abstract contact sheets I made along with the double exposures. I have used a website to show a development of my ideas, as you go down my website the start is research along with experimenting with lots of techniques. However for the development of my final piece you can also see how my ideas and processes developed until I reached the final thing. I have incorporated an online exhibition to show some of my best pieces of work including my final piece.
My final outcome was a contact sheet used with some of the best landscapes I captured, I then organised the contact sheet and lowered the opacity, then I created a new layer and overlayed it as a background onto the contact sheet so that the image looked like it had been crafted out of the little images creating a picturesque and abstract vibe. Initially I was hoping to create a physical cut out of multiple images, however as I experimented, refined and developed I came up with a new idea which I intellectually crafted into my final piece. If I had more time then I would have liked to maybe make a sculpture or a book to continue my documentation, although I was more successful with this in component two. The personal and deeper meaning behind my work is how all the landscapes I used together are reflective of the different parts of my life and the places I have been and the things that I have achieved. I hope that my viewers will understand the processes I have tried and how I responded to them and worked with them to improve my ideas. I also hope the viewers would be able to see the minute details within my work and see the abstract and uniqueness of my work.
